Wax seals add an unmistakable touch of elegance to wedding invitations, letters, and packaging. But getting them just right takes a little know-how. Here are our tried-and-tested tips to help you create flawless wax seals every time.
What You'll Need Before you begin, make sure you have everything ready:
- A wax seal stamp
- Sealing wax (sticks for a glue gun or beads for a spoon)
- A melting gun or a melting spoon
- A plastic container filled with water (frozen overnight into ice) or Ice packs
- A soft cotton cloth
- Silicone baking mat or baking paper
Step 1: Prepare Your Ice The secret to a crisp, clean impression starts with ice. Fill a plastic container with water and leave it in the freezer overnight. You'll use this to cool your stamp before each seal, a simple trick that makes a big difference.
If you're short on time and can't wait overnight, ice packs work just as well as a quick alternative.
Step 2: Cool Your Stamp & Control Your Wax Before pressing, place your stamp on the ice for a few seconds, then dry it thoroughly with a soft cotton cloth. Make sure there are no water droplets left on the stamp, even the smallest bubble will leave a mark on your seal.
Just as important: never let your wax overheat. If it starts flowing too fast or looks too runny, unplug your melting gun or remove the spoon from the heat and wait until the wax becomes viscous and thicker again. Patience here is everything.

Step 3: Practice First Before working directly on your invitations, do a test run on a sheet of baking paper. This lets you get a feel for the wax flow and stamping pressure without any risk. If a seal doesn't turn out the way you'd like, simply remelt the wax in your spoon and try again.
If you'd like to make self-adhesive wax seals, pour and stamp your wax directly onto a silicone mat instead. Let the seals dry completely before peeling them off. Rushing this step can distort the design. Once fully dry and removed from the mat, simply attach self-adhesive sticker dots to the back and they're ready to use.
